The vowel i is generally heard between 5 (2) and shun (as in position), and it may be regarded as the normal vowel, which need not be actually written. The only other vowels heard in this relation are a (as in sensation) and 6 (as in possession). The former of these may be expressed by a heavy dot, and the latter by a light dot, placed beside the backward hook. 161.
