Heretofore the training has been mainly practical; knowledge of how and when to buy, of markets, methods and materials, has been acquired in the school of experience. The men who have graduated from this school are unquestionably as proficient now as if their earlier training had been conducted on academic lines, but they will admit, for the most part, that their education has cost a lot. When one lacks the guidance of precedent or counsel, he can spend considerable time and money in doing the wrong thing before he finds out that it is wrong. So it seems that our universities--that is, those which specialize in courses on business administration--might fittingly consider adding purchasing to the curriculum. It has been demonstrated in at least one case that men of influence in purchasing circles may be counted upon to support such courses. They are ready to advise the instructors on the subjects to be taught and the proper sequence of instruction, and are willing to appear at intervals before the classes in the role of lecturers. A course of study will not make a full-fledged purchasing agent, any more than it will make a star salesman, a bank president or a captain of industry. The way to the top in the business world is along the road of experience. But the initial training will serve the climber in good stead; he will make much better progress than if his vision were restricted to the obstacles immediately confronting him.
