And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. PERHAPS some of you are already saying within yourselves, The text promises that the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper is to be the subject of another discourse; and what occasion is there for us to be so often reminded of this duty? I meet this question with another, and ask you, Why, by neglecting the frequent exhortations you have had on this subject, you minister occasion for being so often reminded? And of this do I feel quite certain, that none who are in the habit of attending this holy Sacrament, will be weary of hearing it recommended, or of being urged not to fall off in their attendance. On the contrary, they will take a pleasure in a recurrence to the consideration of what they know is right, and will be anxiously interested that others should be brought to the same frame of mind, and made equally careful for their immortal souls. It is to him who altogether absents himself from the Lord's Supper, who neglects the commands of his Saviour, who despises the summons of the church, and turns a deaf ear to the warnings of her ministers; it is to him, and him only, that it will appear tedious and oppressive to be frequently told of a duty, the very naming of which sounds like condemnation to him, since it calls to his mind the folly and error of forgetting to observe it.
