Skillet had arrived in advance and ordered rooms and refreshment for distinguished travelers, so that when they entered the inn everything was ready for their comfort and recreation. Skillet, having first assured himself of the proper accommodation of his master and the ladies, betook himself to the bar room to indulge in a little self-comfort. He sat down at a table, and ordered a bottle of wine; and, taking a long clay pipe from a rack which stood upon the table, he filled it, and leaning back in his seat he felt as happy as any lord in the realm.
