It protects all four classes of people in both of the parties--the whole country. When the work is done abroad under a ' tariff for revenue only," the wages go into the pockets of the foreign laborers, including the members of labor unions, and the members of the labor unions in this country in both parties lose the wages, and their wives and children suffer for food, shelter and clothing. This is too plain to admit of argument. Why strike to force the manufacturers of hats, boots, shoes, clothing, and all of the necessities of life to pay still higher wages, when these articles and products are selling for 50 per cent. less money than the articles and products were sold for under free trade at the time the protective duty was imposed, and in the language of the Hon. Roger Q. Mills, of Texas, "our rate of wages is higher than anywhere else in the world!" C. V. POWDERLY ON STRIKES. Mr. C. V. Powderly was elected General Master Workman in 1879, and he held the office until 1893. In an interview in Washington city, March the 12th. 1904, he is quoted as saying: "I have never believed in strikes, and I have done all I could to keep my men out of them. They don't pay, are unnecessary, and they bring great suffering. The interest of the employer is the interest of the man. The men are dependent for their work on the success of the capitalist, and he is dependent on them.
