But if our writings were diiliked by this little detractor, and his other learned friends, why did not they shew their wonderful abilities in the proper time, by doing the work better? Why did they then stand idle, and careless, when thro' our unskilful management they had most reason to buckle on their harness? I fee they are not the most formidable fighters who can swagger bravely, when no enemy is in light; they know how to be out of the way, and take care of their own safety upon the least appearance os danger. The next paragraph is answer'd already. The thing I insisted on, as necessary to be put to the vote, w as not any point of faith, but only whether we should be ejected, i. e. in short, whether we or they should keep the place, of worship, if they were resolv'd to break communion. 'Tis own'd this would have been regular, by which I understand that it would have been according to the rules of justice, in a cause they could have refers d to the determination of a vote, inhere conscience could be satisfied however it be decided. Now this I fay was such a cause. Fcr why might not their conscience be as well satisfied in departing and quitting the place to us., upon a fair determination, as they expected ours should be in quitting it to them, even without such a vote? Certainly it cannot be only weakness of judgment, that makes him so constantly misrepresent the matter he talks about.
