'Till a dart strike through his liver; As a bird hasteth to the fnare, And knoweth not that it is for his life. WE have here in the compass of two verses (according to the common division) three Similitudes; the design of which is to represent, in the most lively and affecting manner, the folly and danger of the young Adulterer, who is the subject of this beautiful chapter. The meaning of the first and last of these similitudes is obvious: that of the B 2 second second is not so, as appears from the different opinions of translators and commentators concerning it, and the several ways they have taken to reconcile it to the other two. The words of it are St TDID Stf DOJD As a fool to the correBion of the stocks: 'Till a dart fir ike through his liver. Before I proceed to examine this text by the Rule 2 laid down in the Introduction, and to offer such an explication of it, as will make it of a piece with the context; it may be proper to see what account has been already given of it by expositors. And here, not to trouble the reader with their verbal criticisms, the sum of what they have advanced on the passage, with any probability, may be comprised in these few words. As a fool unwarily commits such things, as will expose him to shame and punishment; so the incautious young man goes after his neighbour s wife, 'till A Dart Strike Through His Liver: that is, as some explain it, 'till the rage of jealousy push the husband on to murder him; or, as others, '//// he contrast diseases, and become habituated to impurity, and so ruin himse...
