Excerpt: ... 1711. Note.--At the opening of this campaign, such jealousies prevailed among the allies as impaired in a great degree their unanimity and co-operation. And this, perhaps, more than better motives, inclined the Court of Great Britain to pacific measures. The death of the Emperor Joseph, and the succession of his brother Charles, to support whose claim to the crown of Spain the war was originally undertaken, changed the apprehensions respecting the balance of power in Europe. France, adverting to these circumstances, renewed and increased their exertions, notwithstanding their past misfortunes. In no former period of the war were the great talents of the Duke of Marlborough more conspicuous; but, as a lesson of the instability of human glory, at the end of the campaign, he was prosecuted by the At-, torney General, for the dilhonest application of public money, in consequence of a petition from the House of Commons to the Queen, and was removed by her from the command of the army, and from all his public offices. During this campaign, also, Colonel Blackader left the army and never afterwards returned to it, having disposed of his commission in the course of, the next year. January 6. I have this day been making a proposal to quit this employment. I commit it to thee, O Lord. 1 have only proposed, do thou dispose and prosper as far as thou seest it for thy glory and my good.
