A bright, sunny autumn morning found Mrs. Bradshawe and Agnes at breakfast with Mr. Dillon, in his own parlour. It was the first time they had met, for Dillon had scrupulously adhered to his proposal of refraining from an intrusion upon the ladies, unless specially invited to join them. He had even sent to Agnes previously, to request permission to breakfast with them, as he had some particular business to lay before her. On the preceding night even Mrs. Bradshawe had seen nothing of him--on her arrival she had found Agnes sitting, pale and exhausted, watching the still sleeping Sophy. A profusion of thanks had been poured upon the good tempered little woman by both sisters, for her tongue soon aroused the sleeper, to add her expressions of gratitude to those of her sister. An ample repast refreshed the ladies, and the sisters had retired to rest, struck with the extraordinary series of circumstances which had made them the guests of Dillon. They had of course informed her of all their distresses, adding a hundred conjectures upon the failure of their father to meet them. Mrs. Bradshawe was a wise woman in her generation (although she was Ben's mother): she saw that the Miss Leslies were quite ignorant ot the reports which were then current about Overhampton, namely--that the Lieutenant was in great difficulty, if not in absolute distress, and that Dillon was his chief creditor; and as the young ladies were at present guests of Dillon, she thought it might do much harm, and could do no good to inform them of it.
