Excerpt: ... A DIALOGUE BY-WAY OF CATECHISM. SECTION THE SECOND. OF THE EXISTENCE AND ATTRIBUTES OF GOD. I. OF THE EXISTENCE OF GOD. HOW comes man to conceive the existence of the Supersensuous Being he calls God? By an intuitive sense or feeling, first, which disposes him to presume an existence beyond himself and the things around him, and next, by his reason or understanding, which leads him to look for a cause of all that is and for all that comes to pass. The sense he has of the being of God is an Emotional Intuition; the Idea of God he has is an Intellectual Postulate. Distinguishing between these several grounds, how do we--on that we refer to intuitive feeling--come to believe in the existence of God? Belief in a supersensuous existence of some sort is as universal as man, and as old as his first emergence from the merely animal condition in which all analogy and all inquiry show that he began his career on earth. But belief in God, conceived as primordial, self-sufficing Being, Author and Upholder of the Universe, belongs to man far advanced in culture and E civilisation. Nothing of the kind is met with among barbarous and savage tribes. How may the universality of such a rudimentary, at first emotional and at length intellectual, belief among men be accounted for? By recognising the essential sameness in the mental constitution of mankind, this being itself in correlation with and dependent on certain elements in his organisation: all men are organised alike, and so have like mental as well as bodily aptitudes or faculties, but severally possessed by different individuals in diverse measure and in unlike states of activity.
