Excerpt: ... regret I make any remarks upon him, or anj part of his conduct. If something be due to him for personal civilities, and more to his station, I feel that something is also due to my own character and office, and more to truth, to justice, and to the Church. In introducing also any remarks that may have been made in conversations between Bishop Provoost and myself, I shall do violence to my own feelings. But I am compelled to this course by the conduct of Mr.. Jones and others, who, with the view of injuring me, have not scrupled to lay open the sanctuary of private confidence. With Bishop Provoost I think I ought to find an excuse in the circumstance that Mr. Jones, in his late performance, professes to state part of a conversation which took place between Bishop Provoost and myself, and which Bishop Provoost must have detailed to Mr. Jones, or to some person who communicated it to this gentleman. It is very well known that Bishop Provoost, at the time of bis resignation, was determined wholly to withdraw from all public duties, and nev6r again to perform any Episcopal act. This determination he expressed in the strongest terms to all his friends. In the original letter which he addressed to Bishop White, he stated, that he had resigned at a late Convention of the Church in this State, his " Episcopal office." At the instance of several of the Clergy I waited upon him, and with great reluctance he consented to alter the term office to jurisdiction; stating, as his reason for preferring the former term, his determination never again to take any part in the affairs of the Church.
