Het gevolg van den tegenspoed harer wapenen en de vermeerdering harer vijanden was, dat de Porte naar vrede begon te haken; door den Hollandschen resident Colyer daartoe aangezet, besloot de Turksche regeering eene Ambassade naar Weenen te zenden onder het voorwendsel van aan den keizer de troonsbestijging van Sultan Suleiman te notificeeren. De Ambassade bestaande uit de gezanten Sulfikar-Effendi en Alexander Maurocordato kwam het eerst met de keizerlijken in aanraking, twee dagen na den val van het Turksche Belgrado; zij vroegen om een vrijgeleide naar Weenen en werden zeer goed door den keizerlijken bevelhebber, den PrinsKeurvorst van Beieren ontvangen. In de nabijheid van Weenen aangekomen, werden de gezanten opgehouden en hun het lustslot Pottendorf tot verblijf aangewezen. Hier bleven zij vier maanden in een toestand, die indien het geen gevangenschap was, er zeer veel op geleek; de tijd werd doorgebracht met het wisselen van nota's met den Graaf van Caraffa over de wijze waarop de gezanten hunne brieven zouden uitreiken, het ceremonieel bij de keizerlijke audientie in acht te nemen enz. enz. Een groot punt van verschil was vooral de vraag of den gezanten van de Porte de rang moest toegekend worden van ambassadeur, envoye of internuntius. Hunne geloofsbrieven gaven hun den zeer onbestemden titel van plenipotentiarissen; eindelijk besloot men ze als envoyes te beschouwen. Hoewel deze kibbelarijen over het ceremonieel waaraan men destijd zeer hechtte, niet louter voorwendselen waren om de audientie uit te stellen, zoo waren zij toch een zeer gewenscht middel om de zeer langzame en besluitelooze regeeringen van Polen en Venetie den tijd te geven om de instructien voor de onderhandelin...
