On the News of the Duke of Marlborough's being in Motion with the Confederate Army, Marshal Villars, ordered the French Army to march to the Plains of Arras, to cover and prevent any Surprize on that Town; there we lay until Do-way was besieged in Form, having a small River in our Front named the Scarp, where some of the Officers and Soldiers of each Army used to walk down, to their respective Sides of the River, and converse friendly together. However this did not last long, for Marshal Villars ordered some Bridges of Boats to be thrown on the River, and afterwards passed it with his whole Army. Powder and Ball being distributed, it was given out, that he intended the next Day to attempt at all Events the raising the Siege. As the Cartel for Exchange of Prisoners was not yet settled, I, with a tew other Prisoners of our Corps, was ordered to go to Arras, and there wait the Event of this Action.
