Excerpt: ... growing markets, bad it not been for the superior management of this deputation at that critical moment, by laying open to those countries, such an abundant supply of the raw material, from which such goods were made (and shipped as manufactures for fear Mr Pitt should find them out!) as to supersede altogether the demand for goods manufactured, aided by the prohibitions the above measures gave rise to. My reason for dwelling so long, and giving the outlines of what occurred at that particular time with so much minutiae, is to remove that erroneous opinion that has been entertained by all parties from that period to this day, (including every one who has succeeded him in the office Mr Pitt then held) with regard to Mr Pitt ever encouraging that deadly traffic. It is true he permitted it to the extent of which I people will of course infer that they were then very rich, but this was not the case, for with a few exeeptions, even their " old bricks, pieces of wood, and bent iron," were not clearly their own; it was the apparently inexhaustible wealth of the princely merchants of London, Bristol, Hull, Liverpool-, Norwich, Exeter, Birmingham, Sheffield, Manchester, Blackburn, Leeds, &c, many of whom furnished them with the means by which they appeared to be rich, and in this way, all the raw cotton that came to this country for ages up to that period, had come from Smyrna, Lisbon, St. Domingo, &c, as remittances in part for goods sent out by all the above merchants, . and were chiefly imported into London and Bristol, from whence they found their way into Manchester; when the spinners bought them at what was-called six months' credit; but this six months, was in fact, ten months before the vender could call for his bill, and if the spinners paid within the two months...
