Giuseppe Civinini, italienischer Journalist und Dcputirter, geboren am 15. April 1835 zu Pistoja, aus einer edeln, aber armen Familie, sollte Schullehrer werden und machte die nothigen Studien in seiner Vaterstadt. Doch bevor er sie vollendet hatte, wurde er 1850 wegen Theilnahme an politischen Vergehen gefangen gesetzt und musste einen harten Winter im Keiler schmachten. Seine Jugend bewirkte seine Freilassung. Jetzt aber fuhlte er sich in dem Vaterhause nicht mehr heimisch und zog, um nicht der Mutter zur Last zu fallen (sein Vater war gestorben), in die Fremde. Kummerlich nahrte er sich mit Privatarbeiten und schlug sich mit Stundengeben durch; endlich fand er in einem Handlungshause zu Konstantinopel eine feste Anstellung. Hier blieb er, bis 1860 Garibaldi feine Fahrt nach Sicilien unternahm. Jetzt ergriff ihn die Sehnsucht nach dem Vater- lande und dessen Einheit und Befreiung mit Macht. Er gab seine Stelle auf und machte den Feldzug unter Garibaldi mit, am Schlusse desselben war er Hauptmann des Genralstabes. Was Civinini mit Muhe und Anstrengung in bitterer Noth gelernt hatte, das wollte er jetzt zum Besten seines neuen und grossen Vaterlandes anwenden. Er ging -icht mehr in die Fremde, sondern nach Turin. Aus dem Patrioten wurde jetzt ein Poliv aus dem Handlungsdiener ein Journalist. Begreiflicherweise kannte der junge CiviiHim, der seine besten Jahre in der Fremde zugebracht hatte, seine Heimat und deren Bedurfnisse nicht, und ebenso begreiflich ist es, dass er sich auf Politik gar nicht verstand. Das hinderte ihn nicht Partei zu nehmen, und zwar eine recht extreme Partei, ja gerade diese TlMllt- fache erklart jene extreme
