Die grundsatzliche Einheit der anorganischen und der aus dieser so spat erst entstandenen organischen Natur ist eine notwendige Forderung des monistischen Denkens (M. 9. 37). Wir konnen wohl den Gegensatz von anziehenden und abstossenden Kraften anerkennen (M. 14--15), aber keine immateriellen Krafte" d. h. Krafte ohne stofflichen Trager. Denn von solchen hat uns die Erfahrung bis heute keine einzige kennen gelehrt (W. 90) und sie waren unserer wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnis unzuganglich (L. 23. u. a.). Freilich sind auch die Atome und deren mechanische Zentralkrafte kein Gegenstand der Erfahrung, sondern nur ein solcher des wissenschaftlichen Glaubens. Kein Naturforscher hat diese kleinen materiellen Teile jemals gesehen: sie sind eine so unbewiesene und unbeweisbare Hypothese, wie es nur irgendeine geben kann (V. II. 263. M. 37). Aber diese Annahme ist vernunftig: sie uberschreitet nicht die Grenzen der Natur, fugt sich dem Substanzgesetz ohne Widerspruch ein, wahrt so die Einheit der Naturkrafte und befriedigt das stetige Kausalitatsbedurfnis unserer Vernunft (L. 24). Immaterielle Lebenskrafte dagegen, d.h. Krafte ohne stofflichen Trager waren ubernaturliche Krafte: sie gehorten nicht in den Rahmen des Substanzgesetzes, hoben also die Einheit der Natur auf, waren mit der Anerkennung fester Naturgesetze unvereinbar und konnen deshalb von der wahren, allen Wunderglauben bekampfenden Wissenschaft nicht anerkannt werden (L. 24 u. a.). Der Monismus fordert die grundsatzliche Einheit, d. h. die wesentliche Gleichartigkeit aller Naturerscheinungen: der organischen wie der anorganischen.
