If he can be helped over all his difficulties, he will make no effort to surmount them alone. Only when a child fails, after a reasonable effort, should the word at which he stumbles be supplied to him. n. To give children confidence, they should frequently be exercised in reading the back lessons, and may occasionally, with advantage, read the lesson books of a lower class. 12. The lessons should be read in the order they occur in the book; and a class should never pass to a new lesson till they have thoroughly mastered the old one. INTELLIGENCE. To read aloud with intelligence, is to read so as to be understood; and to interpret an author's thoughts in the sense he would wish them interpreted. It mainly depends on the reader's attention to two things--Emphasis and Pause. I. Emphasis. Emphatic reading consists in placing particular stress on the important word or words in a sentence, so as to throw into relief the idea or ideas uppermost in the author's mind. We can emphasize, --that is, isolate, --a tvord or phrase in different ways: --(i.) We may pronounce it with greater force than the other words or phrases. (ii.) We may alter its pitch, and pronounce it either in a higher or lower key than the rest of the sentence, (iii.) We may pause before and after it, separating it from the other parts of the sentence, (iv.) We may use any or all of these expedients in combination. How to teach Emphasis. i. Before a child can select the emphatic words, that is, the words expressing the leading thoughts in a sentence, he must have a mental grasp of the whole passage.
