Wer war John Toland?1) John2) Toland wurde in Irland auf der nordlichsten Halbinsel Inison bei Londonderry, wahrscheinlich in dem Flecken Redcastle am 30. November 1670 (1671) geboren. Er war der naturliche Sohn eines katholischen Priesters.3) In seiner Knabenzeit zeichnete er sich durch vortreffliche Anlagen und grosse Lernbegier aus. Die Schwierigkeiten des Livius waren fur ihn schon in seinem funfzehnten Lebensjahre nicht mehr vorhanden. Weniger zeigt er sich in den Geist der griechischen Sprache eingeweiht, und seine Kenntnisse des Hebraischen scheinen nur gering gewesen zu sein. Er beherrschte die franzosische, auch die italienische Sprache und wird, wie seine Reisen es mit sich brachten, in ausreichendem Masse auch mit dem Hollandischen und selbst mit dem Deutschen vertraut gewesen sein. Der irlandische Dialekt war seine Muttersprache, und aus der nach seinem Tode herausgegebenen Sammlung seiner nachgelassenen Schriften ist zu ersehen, dass er sich Fensch, Pantheistikon Tolands. 1 auch mit dem Dialekt der gegenuberliegenden Kuste der Bretagne (Armorica) beschaftigt hat. Nach der von ihm selbst verfassten lateinischen Grabschrift wusste er mehr als zehn Sprachen. Seine ganze Lebensfuhrung liefert den Beweis, dass er von fruh auf von einer lebhaften Ruhmbegierde erfullt war, und dass er diesem einen Grundtriebe seines Wesens alles andere, selbst den Trieb, die Wahrheit zu ergrunden, unterordnete.
