1840. .: ... Florenz. Dante's Florenz findet man nicht sogleich. Nichts sieht weniger den Toskanern des t3. Iahr- hunderts ahnlich, als die heutigen Toskaner. Diese gewaltigen Charactere, diese tiefen und rohen Leidenschaften haben friedlichen Sitten, liebenswurdigen Gewohnheiten den Platz geraumt. Auf dieses Leben voll Unternehmungen, Hass und Gefahren ist ein mussiges, sanftes Leben gefolgt. Selbst die Landleute in der Umgegend von Florenz besitzen eine gewisse Eleganz und Zierlichkeit der Sitten und Sprache. Der alte toskanische Typus der Mittelalters ist nach und nach durch die Hand der Medicis verloscht worden. LeopoldsMilde hat vollends die letzten Rohheiten desselben geglattet. Eben so ists mit dem Anblicke von Florenz. Der erste Eindruck, den es macht, ist sehr modern. Selbst die Monumente, jene alten Schlosser, die wie z. B. der Pallast Strozzi, die Strassen mit ihren schwarzen, zinnenrcichen Massen verdustern, sind im Ganzen minder alt als Dante. Zu seiner Zeit war die Cathedrale kaum noch angefangen. Hundert uud sechsundsechszig Iahre und Brunelleschi's Genie bedurfte es um sie zu beendigen. Das einzige wirklich noch bestehende Denkmal, dessen Dante erwahnt, ist das schone Baptisterium, das er so sehr liebte: Mein schones San-Giovanni." Doch erinnern hie und da einige Namen und Spuren an das Florenz des 14ten Jahrhunderts. Ein gunstiger Zufall hatte meinem Fenster gegenuber eine Mauer hingestellt, auf welcher das Wappen Karls von Valois, die Lilie, fur Dante das Emblem der Verweisung und des Exils, jetzt selbst verwiesen und exilirt, zu sehen war. Betrachtet man alles naher, so findet sich nach und nach das alte Florenz im Schoosse des neuen. Man sieht ein neues Bauwerk sich auf alter Unterlage erheben. Fenster mit grunen Ialousieen zeigen sich in Mauern aus ungeheuern schwarzen und fazettenartig bearbeiteten Steinen. Da findet man die beiden Epochen &
