Excerpt: ... THE ITINERARY. N.B. It has teen assumed that, along the railway routes, the tourist sits looking towards the engine. The first objects of interest to a tourist in Cornwall are so situated with reference to the Tamar, the County boundary, that, by the aid of steamboats, they may be most conveniently visited from Plymouth. The noble park of Mount Edgcumbe, the quaint little fishing village of Cawsand, Maker Heights and fortifications, and the Rame Head, with its isolated, desecrated chapel, lie close to the Cornish shore of Plymouth Harbour; whilst, having passed up Hamoaze under the gigantic Albert railway bridge, a few miles up the river are the Tudor mansion of Cothele, and the rocks and woods of Morwellham, well worth visiting. The little villages of Callington, Calstock, and Gunnis Lake are scarcely of sufficient interest to detain the tourist. The foregoing, as well as trips to the Eddystone Lighthouse, * and to Whitsand Bay, are so essentially the subjects of excursions from Plymouth that it has been found the most convenient course--although they all belong, geographically, to Cornwall--to describe them at length in the handbook of this series which treats of South Devon. Yet it may be observed that from Plymouth, via Penlee Point, to the Rame Head, and thence along the coast to Port Wrinkle and Looe, is a very pleasant walk. The walk through Mount Edgcumbe Park is open to the public on Wednesdays only. The Cornish Itinerary will therefore commence with the passage across the Tamar (= the big water) over the Royal Albert Bridge, one of the most audacious accomplishments of even the daring genius of Brunel.
