Tourmentes, emprisonnes, exiles pour ces vaines disputes, et sans cesse occupes a defendre une cause si futile, combien d'annees la philosophie et les lettres ont a regretter dans leur vie? Que de lumieres n'auraient-ils pas ajoutees a celles dont ils avaient deja eclaire leur siecle, s'ils n'avaient ete entraines par ces malheureuses et pitoyables distractions, si indignes d'occuper des hommes comme eux i Osons en dire davantage, au risque de nous ecarter un moment de notre sujet. La raison peut-elle s'emoecner de verser des larmes ameres, quand elle voit combien les querelles, si souvent excitees dans le sein du christianisme...
