Wirklich war ich grosser und entwickelter als er und Brattstrom, auch wohl ein wenig alter als sie, ungefahr dreizehn. So nahm ich Iohnnys Erklarung stillschweigend an, obgleich sie eine gewisse Krankung fur mich enthielt. Denn in Iohnnys Gesellschaft geriet man leicht in ein etwas komisches Licht, wenn man weniger klein, fein und korperlich kindlich war als er, der das alles in so hohem Grade war. Er konnte dann mit seinen hubschen blauen, zugleich freundlich und spottisch lachelnden Madchenaugen an einem hinaufsehen, mit einem Ausdruck, als wollte er sagen: Was bist du schon fur ein langer Flegel!"
