Mill hat, seitdem seine Gattin ihm auf einer Reise in Avignon durch den Tod entrissen wurde, stets den grossten Teil des Jahres in der mittelalterlichen Papst-Stadt in Sudfrankreich zugebracht. Er lebte dort in der Einsamkeit eines Landhauses ihrem Andenken und der Vollendung seiner Werke. Dort ist auch er am 8. Mai 1878, nach einem Leben voll rastloser Arbeit, zur ewigen Ruhe eingegangen. Zweite sKapitel. Die induktive Logik. In Deutschland herrschte in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 19. Jahrhunderts auf dem Gebiet der Logik noch fast unumschrankt die dialektische Methode Hegels. Die Reaktion gegen ihn geht von wenigen selbstandigen Geistern aus, vor allem von Lotze und Trendelenburg. Beide sind von der Ueberzeugung durchdrungen, dass die dialektisch-spekulative Methode nicht vermag, einen adaquaten Ausdruck fur die Gesetze unseres Denkens zu bieten. Weist Trendelenburg im Gegensatz dazu wieder auf den Formalismus der Aristotelischen Logik hin, so sucht Lotze, im eigenen Denken, unabhangig von der Ueberlieferung, eine neue Basis der Logik zu gewinnen. Dabei kommt es ihm vor allem darauf an, stets die Fuhlung der logischen Probleme mit den naturwissenschaftlichen und mathematischen Methoden herzustellen. -- Viel lebhafter noch wird zu jener Zeit in England der Zusammenhang der Logik mit den Erfahrungswissenschaften betont; dafur zeugen die Werke von Sir J. Herschel17), von Whewell18), und ganz besonders das theoretische Hauptwerk von J. St. Mill: A System of Logic Ratiocinative and Inductive19)." Der junge Mill hatte sich von seinem 20. Jahre an logischen Studien zugewandt und in Gemeinschaft mit seinen Freunden z. B. die Computatio sive Logica" von Hobbes durchgearbeite.
