En effet, il y a bien loin de ceux qui disaient, soit que les universaux etaient des noms, soit qu'ils etaient des conceptions de l'esprit, soit qu'ilsetaient des essences, aux modernes qui affirment que les genres, les especes, les individus, sont les effets de causes qu'il est donne a l'homme de pouvoir seulement comprendre ou abstraire de l'etude des effets; aux modernes qui, par ex., donnent aux causes universelles, ou universaux. le nom de lois, et aux effets, celui de phenomenes ou d'apparences, et qui affirment, enfin, que la nature est, selon l'energique expression de VanHelmont, cet ordre de Dieu par lequel une chose est ce qu'elle est, et agit selon ce qu'il lui est ordonne (naturam jussum Dei...
