In the Autumn of 1887 it occurred to; some Antiquaries, resident in the Counties of Somerset and Dorset, that the time was come for the establishment of a local Noies-atfi' Qtfjrfei?, for circulation in the district. After the discussion of a few preliminaries, a Committee was formed, two Editors were appointed, and the experiment was set in action, with what amount of success the public, by this time, has had an opportunity of judging. It has been no light matter to edit, and carry safely through the Press, some 390 articles and communications, ranging over an extended field of antiquarian research, but the Editors have worked con amort, with a result, as they believe, not altogether unappreciated, and they are pleased to be able to state that many subscribers have, wholly unsolicited, been so kind as to express their satisfaction with the periodical, and the general character of its contents. In now presenting to the subscribers, the first volume, rendered complete with an accompanying Index and Title-page, they desire gratefully to acknowledge the uniform courtesy that has been accorded them by every one connected with the undertaking, iv. and, while doing so, they again avail themselves of the opportunity of reminding their readers that the more extensive the circulation of the Magazine, the wider will be the field from which materials will be drawn, the more numerous the staff of contributors, and the more generally useful the contents of every page.
