Deze trok in 1147 onder Keizer Koenraad III ten kruistocht, werd om zijn dapperheid door den Keizer-zelf tot ridder geslagen en liet kort daarna op dien tocht het leven. De naam zijner gade, uit het geslacht der Aldighieri of Alighieri, ging vervolgens op zijn zoon en aldus eindelijk op den Dichter over, die bij den doop in de St. Janskerk te Florence nog den naam van Durante of, verkort, Dante ontving. Cacciaguida's zoon, Alighieri I, zag zijn geslacht in zijn eenigen zoon Bellincione en vervolgens in zijn kleinzoon Alighieri II voortgeplant, welke laatste de vader van onzen Dichter was. Nog op kinderlijken leeftijd verloor Dante zijn vader, zoodat wij zeker, ook al weten wij van de moeder niet meer dan den naam, mogen besluiten, dat aan Donna Bella, want aldus heette- zij, de eer toekomt de opvoeding van haar zoon bestuurd te hebben. Boccaccio meldt ons dat niemand minder dan Brunetto Latini naar de gewoonte dier tijden, den horo...
