Erstens: dass in dem Gemutszustand, den wir Wollung nennen, nichts von einer prophetischen Vorwegnahme liegt, die uns vor aller Erfahrung belehrt, dass der Wollung eine Wirkung folgen wird. Auch in dieser Form des Ursachseins liegt nichts mehr als woruber die Erfahrung Kunde giebt, nichts mehr als die Wahrnehmung einer unabanderlichen und unbedingten Folge (ebda.). Zweitens: dass der nisus" Humes, welcher dem unwissenschaftlichen Begriff der Kraft anhaftet, aus der Erfahrung der Anstrengung (effort) abgeleitet ist, welche in unserem Willensleben zwischen Wollung und Handlung sich einschiebt und, als Widerstandsgefuhl, die Muskelthatigkeit sowie die Affektionen von Gehirn und Nerven begleitet. Der Kraftbegriff ist also rein subjektiven Ursprungs (ebda. 377/8). Neben der Erfahrung, welche die Thatsachen zusammenhangender Reihen von Veranderungen an die Hand giebt, und der verallgemeinernden Assoziation, welche die Kausalvorstellung erzeugt (vergl. SWH 371), ist in diesem also nichts Objektives. Rationelle Notwendigkeit kann durch Erfahrung und Assoziation naturlich nicht begrundet werden, dagegen kann das Gefuhl der Notwendigkeit, eine Notwendigkeit des Gedankens" (ebda 371), als Produkt der unkritischen Willensmetaphysik sehr leicht begriffen werden. 9. Riehl (a. a. O. 2, 1 247 ff.) wendet gegen Mill ein, er verwerfe mit Recht den Schluss von dem post hoc auf das propter hoc fur alle besonderen Falle, doch habe er in seiner Theorie des Kausalgesetzes fur dieses keinen anderen Beweisgrund als die unabanderliche Folge.
