Mitchell was born in the "fields of Lincolnshire" into a poor family (his father was a butcher) presumably during the 1920's. Early on in his childhood, his leadership skills were obvious and so the military was the natural path for him to follow. He had the rare accolade of rising through the ranks from a mere private to an officer and was second-in-command of the Desert Rats under Liam J. Brentwood for some time during the Second World War.
