Exeter was the capital of the county of Cornwall. Exeter is located in eastern Cornwall, with roads leading northeast to Chard in Somerset, south to Dartmouth, southwest to Bridgewater, southwest to Plymouth and northwest to Barnstaple. Exeter is one of the two gateway towns into Cornwall from Somerset, the other being Barnstaple (with it's connection to Bridgewater, Somerset).
