Excerpt: Almaren (Quenya Tengwar: full spelling or vowel-abbreviated spelling; IPA: meaning blessed place) was an island in the Great Lake, the home of the Valar in the middle of Arda. Not much is known about the actual landscape of the island only that it was covered with green grass, but there may have been a dwelling of a sorts there. Almaren was raised sometime after the retreat of Melkor when the earth had become firm and flat.It was at this place where the light of the Two Lamps mingled. Almaren was attacked and damaged by Melkor, and the Valar moved far to the West, to Valinor. According to some traditions, the island of Almaren survived the attack, and was the same island as Tol Eressea. The Kingdom of Angmar was an evil realm founded by the evil Lord of the Ringwraiths, who became known as the "Witch-king of Angmar" in TA 1300 in the far north of the Misty Mountains, with the sole purpose of weakening the northern kingdom of Arnor. Since the Witch-king was a vassal to the Dark Lord Sauron, it is presumed that Angmar's wars against the successor kingdoms of Arnor were done at Sauron's bidding.
