Prior to his miliary career, he was the leader of a gang known as the "Sly cats" (Polish: "Psotnych kotow"). Their activities ultimately led to the group being imprisoned in Kovir. After the group was released by Esterad Thyssen, they left for Redania where they formed the mercenary group known as the Free Company. Adam, and indeed the whole Free Company, took part in the battles at Mayena and Brenna, after which, although he had not yet asked his existing wife for a divorce, he asked for the hand of Pretty Kitty.
