Excerpt: As in other fandoms, Forever Knight fans often use acronyms or abbreviations to speed up their references to the names of actors, episodes, factions, etc. The most important of all such abbreviations is FK. It stands, of course, for Forever Knight itself. In media fandom, an alternative universe (also known as an alternate universe) is one in which canonical facts are deliberately altered. The term is commonly abbreviated to AU. AU fan fiction is a type or form of fan fiction set in such an alternative universe. Stories of this type allow the author to explore possibilities that might have arisen had circumstances or decisions been different. Typically, the alterations involve significant incidents in the source material, so that the implications of pivotal changes to canon can be logically extrapolated. For example, AU fan fiction often examines the effect of pivotal changes on the outcome of subsequent canonical events. In the Forever Knight universe, pivotal events that have engendered AU fiction include the death of Schanke in "Black Buddha, Part One," the death of Vachon in "Francesca," and LaCroix's acquiescence to Nick's request not to bring across his sister, Fleur, in the flashback to "Be My Valentine...
