Bella is first seen as a young kittypet, and a good friend of Cherrypaw's.When Firestar and Sandstorm are trying to rebuild SkyClan, Cherrypaw, a young SkyClan apprentice, suggests to them that they come with her, and meet some cats she knows that might join the rapidly forming Clan. Firestar accepts her offer, whereas Sandstorm hangs back. Soon, he and Cherrypaw arrive at a Twoleg dwelling, where a kittypet, named Bella, lives. When Firestar first sees Bella, he is reminded of his sister Princess, because of their similar tabby-and-white pelt. They talk to the kittypet about SkyClan, and invite her to join, but she declines their offer, saying she would upset her Twolegs too much, along with missing them too much. Cherrypaw mentions earlier that Bella's Twolegs feed her cream and take care of her well. Bella says one night she was stuck in another Twolegs' shed and when she finally got home, her Twolegs were worried and the kits were crying and wailing. She seems intrigued by the offer until she realizes what it really means.However, even though her refusing to join was a severe blow to Cherrypaw, Firestar doesn't think too much of it, for he had noted that Bella had extremely soft, pink pads, which would have made it difficult for her to survive in SkyClan.
