Auszug: ...ihn vorliegenden Anklagen, zum Papst nach Rom schickte. Seine Heiligkeit liess durch seinen Jnqnisitor die Sache ungerecht richten und wies die Klagen des Ordens als unbegrundet zuruck. Ein im Jahre 1603 gehaltenes General-Kapitel hatte hauptsachlich den Zweck, die Bestimmungen zur Aufnahme neuer Ordensmitglieder festzustellen, da in dieser Beziehung oft zu weit, und oft nicht weit genug gegangen wurde. Ruhmlichst die Mittelstrasse haltend waren es namentlich die Ritter der deutschen Zunge, welche durch ihre ausserste Strenge in den Bedingungen zur Aufnahme neuer Ritter an den Tag legten, wie sie von der hohen Wurdigkeit des Ordens durchdrungen waren, nnd wie gewissenhaft sie seine Regeln befolgten. Als z. B. Carl von Brie, ein naturlicher Sohn des Herzogs Heiurich von Lothringen, sich um die Aufnahme in die deutsche Zunge bewarb und dies Gesuch von dem Ordensrath unterstutzt ward, lehnten sich die sammtlichen im Convent anwesenden deutschen Ritter mit solcher Heftigkeit dagegen auf, dass sie die Wappen des Grossmeisters und des Ordens von dem Portal ihrer Auberge herunterrissen und nur das des Kaisers uber demselben duldeten.--So streng hielten die deutschen Ritter auf ihre Rechte und auf ihren Adel, wahrend die ubrigen Zungen durchaus keine Schwierigkeiten machten, unehelich geborene Furstensohne in ihre Mitte aufzunehmen. Als im Jahre 1616 der Herzog von Nevers den Vorschlag machte, dem Johanniter-Orden den alten Orden des heiligen Grabes zu attachiren, schickte der Grossmeister den Dom Luis Mendez de Vaseoneellos, Titular-Bailli von Aere, einen sehr geschickten Diplomaten, nach Paris, um
