Die anderen, die Gesunden, glaubten sich nicht huten zu mussen, sie kannten kein Mass in der Lebensfuhrung. Die einen rasteten zu lange, die anderen arbeiteten zu scharf, assen zu stark, tranken zu viel, hielten in ihren Leidenschaften keine Regel, kein vernunftiges Ziel. Wenn ich der guten Leute gedenke, die in jenen Gegenden lebten, so zeigt sich im allgemeinen Folgendes: Die Wohlhabenden und Ge niessenden starben fruhzeitig, die Armen, kummerlich lebenden, erreichten ein hoheres Alter. Meine Mutter starb freilich schon in ihrem vierundfunfzigsten Lebensjahre; mein Vater ist zweiundachtzig Iahre alt geworden. Ich hatte in meiner fruhen Iugend eine Lungenentzundung zu uberstehen gehabt und kann mich noch recht wohl erinnern an die feuchtkalten Egel, ..."
