Excerpt: ...the in-, habitants; its-fituation is alfo admirable, being enclofed with hills on all fides, but the fouth, to which it lies open; and the great quantity of garden ground which divides the two main ftreets, admits a free circulation of air between the houfes. Indeed, few towns abound fo much with gardens, fcarce ahoufebut has its fpot of ground adjoining, forming at once, afource of health, pleafure and profit fo its poffeffor. THE THE POPULATION Of Hafting is pretty confiderable for the fize of the town; it is computed at about three thoufand fouls; in which number are included between two and three hundred fifhermen and other feamen. MINERAL WATERS. In the neighbourhood of this town arc feveral chalybeate fprings, but their particular virtues have not as yet been afcertained. TRADE. The trade of this town, was formerly very confiderable. Fifty or fixty years ago, they had veflels which traded from hence up the Straits; the fifhery was then much more confiderable than it is now, efpecially the herring, of which, great quantities were dryed and exported. It has already been feen by the the ancient Charters, that boats went from thence, during the herring feafon, to Yarmouth, there to catch and dry their fifh. They ufed, likewife, to go to the North foreland and Margate, for the fame purpofe, though that cuftom has been long dropped; and for feveral years paft, a number of large boats come annually from Brighton to Hafting, where they ftay the feafon to catch and fell their fifli. Within the laft thirty years, the fifheries have very much declined, though there are now great quantities of herrings, mackerel and trawl fifh caught, and fent to the London markets in carts; as well as fupplying the country around; befides, about 1500 barrels...
