The mucous membrane of the stomach is full of minute hexagonal cavities, about l-200th of an inch in diameter. At the bottom, and intervals of these cavities, are the gastric follicles, which are minute tubes, perpendicular to the surface, from l-500th to l-360th of an inch in diameter, and from l-60th to l-20th of an inch in length. Those near to the esophagus are simple tubes, and secrete "mucus," and those nearer the duodenum are more club-shaped in form, and are the peptic glands.--Quain. The small intestine is about 20 feet long, and 1 inches in diameter, and is made up of 4 membranes: mucous, muscular, areolar and serous. The muscular fibers run both lengthwise and crosswise of the intestine, and are entirely of the involuntary kind. And it is by the contraction of the fibers that the "peristaltic" motions are induced, by means of which the contents are carried onward. Vomiting, or regurgitation, however, is brought about almost entirely by the diaphragm. The folds of the intestine are for furnishing increased mucous surface. Sappey found 600 in the first half, and 250 in the last half of the intestine. The villi are 10,125,000 in number.--Sappey. "The large intestine averages If inches to 2f inches in diameter."--Brinton. The appendix vermiformis is three to six inches long. "Its uses are unknown."--Flint. Is always larger and longer in animals of slow digestion, or where the food is taken at long intervals. "Among rasores (scratching birds) it is three times the length of the body."--Marshall.
