Druckt der Organist eine der Tasten nieder, so offnet sich im Innern der Orgel die entsprechende Klappe im Windkasten, so dass der Wind in die betreffende Pfeife stromen nnd die Pfeife so lang tonen kann, wie der Finger die Taste niederdruckt, oder so lang wie der Wind in dem Windkaflen ist. Der Organist hat desswegen, mehr als der Picmofpieler, darauf zu sehen, dass seine Finger die richtige Zeit auf der Taste liegen bleiben. Die Pfeifen geben nicht nur je nach ihrer Grosse einen hohen oder tiefen Ton, sondern weil sie auf verschiedene Weise eingerichtet und von verschiedenem Material verfertigt sind, auch ihrer Natur nach verschiedene Tone an, so dass sie andere Instrumente, wie die Trompete, die Posaune, die Klarinette, das Hoboe, die Flote, die Violin, sogar die menschliche Stimme tauschend nachahmen. Zndem hat die Orgel Vorrichtungen, vermoge welcher man mit derselben Taste nicht nnr einen Ton, sondern auch seine erste und zweite Oktave aufwarts und abwarts angeben kann, daher kommt es, dass ungeachtet die Klaviatur nur von vier bis sechsthalb Oktaven hat, die Orgeltone sich in neun wirklichen Oktaven bewegen. Ein guter Organist ist nicht allein ein guter Spieler, fondern er kennt auch den ganzen Mechanismus der Orgel und die Natur jeder Pfeife; er weiss, durch eine einsichtsvolle Negistrirung sein Spiel schon und interessant vorzutragen.
