Excerpt: ... it is evident to the author that the limit to the capacity of the steam locomotive is already in sight, and that to provide for the necessary continuous development of railway traffic it is essential that the substitution of electric traction should be considered. The tendency to increase the speed and weight of trains, and to utilise the track and rolling stock to the greatest advantage, shows itself in all branches of railway construction, and it appears that the limits of steam traction are already in view, and are closely approached on some of the important main lines, both in America and Europe. We may add that the financial results of railway operation in the United Kingdom, at least, indicate that existing methods do not satisfactorily meet modern conditions, and that railway managements, when they have found the limits of the advantages of amalgamations and similar nostrums now fashionable, will have to turn their attention to more fundamental improvements. Our author infers that the development of traffic requirements in the directions of higher speed, greater utilisation of the track, heavier paying loads, and cheaper transport will persist, and that as steam traction has reached its limit, it must give way to something superior. The alternative is to suppose that railway transport has reached finality, and that no improvement is possible. As the ultimate limit to the economical capacity of a railway is prescribed by the power and other qualities of the locomotive, a general comparison between the peculiarities of steam and electric locomotives defines the character and extent of the improvements which are potentially attainable by the substitution of electric for steam traction.
