In the final section we demonstrate utility of the results in modeling emissive obscurant effects using semi-empirical methods, explain the relationship of the MPTR measurements to the sky-to-ground parameters used in the older models, and discuss the limitations of the of other modeling approaches based on linear approximations. There are four appendices; the first three providing details of the MPTR measurements and the fourth giving more detail on the use of conventional IR imagery. 2. Overview of the Experiment A unique and defining feature of the experiment was the simultaneous measurement of direct transmission and total radiance over multiple paths and multiple spectral bands through artificially generated aerosol clouds of varied optical thicknesses. Radiative measurements were performed with both the MPTR system and a research grade dual band IR imager. The experiments were conducted near the SLAD 100 ft tower site at the White Sands Missile Range, NM. The general experimental layout is shown in figure 1.
