This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1708 edition. Excerpt: ...we have reason to conclude, that no body did join in it; because our Adversaries cannot shew by any one Instance, that ever the Kings ofjndabdid in those days use to officiate in that manner, by offering up a Prayer in which the Congregation join'd. For that, as tar as appears, was a Duty appropriate to the Priesthood. And consequently it cannot be prov'd, that either the ancient Jews or our Savior did ever join in Prayers conceiv'd extempore. But our Adversaries have often enough pretended to prove, that the Apostles and primitive Christians did join in Prayers conceiv'd extempore. I shall therefore consider what they have offer'd upon this head; and examin those Passages, whether of Scripture or Antiquity, which they build their Assertion on; and I hope to give the Reader a satisfactory Explication of them, and to shew, that it cannot be prov'd from any of them, that either the Apostles or the primitive...
