Im Zweiten Weltkrieg fuhrte er den Widerstand des Freien Frankreich gegen die deutsche Besatzung an und war danach von 1944 bis 1946 Chef der Provisorischen Regierung. Im Zuge der Algerienkrise wurde er 1958 mit der Bildung einer Regierung beauftragt und setzte eine Verfassungsreform durch, mit der die Funfte Republik begrundet wurde, deren Prasident er von 1959 bis 1969 war. Die auf ihn zuruckgehende politische Ideologie des Gaullismus beeinflusst die franzosische Politik. Geburtshaus de Gaulles in LilleDe Gaulle wuchs in einer katholisch-konservativ gepragten und gleichzeitig sozial fortschrittlichen Intellektuellenfamilie in Lille auf: Sein Grossvater war Historiker, seine Grossmutter Schriftstellerin. Sein Vater, der an verschiedenen katholischen Privatschulen lehrte, bevor er seine eigene grundete, liess ihn die Werke von Barres, Bergson, Peguy und Maurras entdecken. Wahrend der Dreyfus-Affare distanzierte sich die Familie von reaktionar-nationalistischen Kreisen und unterstutzte den aus antisemitischen Grunden verurteilten Alfred Dreyfus. 1908 trat de Gaulle in die Militarschule Saint-Cyr ein, die er 1912 mit Diplom und Ernennung zum Leutnant verliess. Anschliessend trat er in die franzosische Armee ein. Er wurde dem 33. Infanterieregiment in Arras zugeteilt, dessen Kommandeur seit 1910 Oberst Henri Philippe Petain war. Zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs stieg er vom Oberleutnant zum Hauptmann
