Juli 1567 als Maria I. Konigin von Schottland sowie durch ihre Ehe mit Franz II. von 1559 bis 1560 auch Konigin von Frankreich, sie entstammte dem Haus Stuart. Da Schottland zur Zeit ihrer Geburt von politischen und religiosen Unruhen erschuttert war, wurde Maria Stuart im Kindesalter nach Frankreich gebracht und an der Seite ihres kunftigen Ehemanns Franz II. erzogen. Durch den fruhen Tod des Konigs wurde sie bereits im Alter von 17 Jahren zur Witwe und kehrte nach dem langjahrigen Aufenthalt in Frankreich 1561 nach Schottland zuruck. Dort gelang es ihr nicht, die zahlreichen Spannungen unter den konkurrierenden Adelsfamilien zu befrieden. Nach der Ermordung ihres zweiten Gemahls Lord Darnley, an der ihr eine Mitschuld angelastet wurde, dankte sie 1567 zugunsten ihres Sohnes Jakob I. ab und ging ins Exil nach England. Ihre zweite Lebenshalfte war gepragt von einem fortwahrenden Konflikt mit Konigin Elisabeth I., der sich unter anderem auf einen Anspruch auf den englischen Konigsthron zuruckfuhren liess. Nachdem Maria Stuart verdachtigt worden war, an einem geplanten Attentat auf die englische Konigin beteiligt gewesen zu sein, wurde sie wegen Hochverrats 1587 hingerichtet. Aufgrund der zahlreichen kunstlerischen Bearbeitungen ihrer Lebensgeschichte gilt sie neben Macbeth als eine der bekanntesten schottischen Monarchengestalten. Ma..
