Extrait: Gabriel Matzneff, ne le 12 aout 1936 a Neuilly-sur-Seine, est un ecrivain francais. Gabriel Matzneff est issu d'une famille russe emigree en France apres la revolution de 1917. Ses parents divorcent dans sa prime enfance, et ses premieres annees sont assez chaotiques, entre tensions familiales et Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il evolue des son plus jeune age dans le milieu raffine et cultive des Russes blancs emigres de Paris, ou religion et litterature nourrissent egalement les esprits. Il demeure petri de cette atmosphere particuliere, et y fait reference a de nombreuses reprises dans son uvre, particulierement dans ses trois premiers romans. Des l'age de 10 ans, il monte a cheval. Il gagne son premier concours hippique a 13 ans. Apres son service militaire, il coupera toute relation avec le monde du cheval. En 1953, il commence a tenir son journal intime, qu'il publie progressivement a partir de 1976. Il l'acheve le 31 decembre 2008. A partir de 1954, il etudie les Lettres classiques a la Sorbonne, ou il suit egalement des cours de philosophie, notamment ceux de Jankelevitch et Deleuze, tout en etudiant le russe aux Langues orientales. En 1957, il rencontre Henry de Montherlant, dont il demeure un fidele et un intime, malgre des brouilles intermittentes, jusqu'au suicide de ce dernier en 1972. Il dispersera ses cendres, avec son executeur testamentaire, Jean-Claude Barat, sur le forum romain et dans le Tibre. En 1959, il part en Algerie francaise pour faire de l'epigraphie latine.
