Sa musicalite, son talent et son importance dans l'histoire du ragtime et de la musique americaine sont exceptionnels. Encore aujourd'hui, Scott Joplin demeure le plus connu des compositeurs de ragtime. Sa piece la plus celebre est The Entertainer, publie en 1902. On ne connait pas precisement la date ni le lieu de naissance de Scott Joplin. On sait qu'il vient au monde dans le nord-est de l'Etat americain du Texas. Selon le recensement americain du 18 juillet 1870, il est age de deux ans cette annee-la et se trouve alors dans le comte de Davis. Une date d'octobre ou novembre 1867 semble donc probable. Dix ans plus tard, le recensement suivant le situe a Texarkana, toujours au Texas. Scott est l'enfant de Florence Givins, du Kentucky, nee vers 1841, et de Giles Joplin, de la Caroline du Nord, ...
