Elle aurait ete enlevee et retenue contre son gre dans un grenier a foin, avant de s'en echapper apres environ un mois de captivite. Des personnes soupconnees d'etre ses agresseurs ont ete jugees et reconnues coupables, mais ont ensuite ete liberees a la lumiere d'elements nouveaux. Elizabeth Canning, qui a finalement ete reconnue coupable de parjure, a ete condamnee a la deportation penale. Canning disparait le 1 janvier 1753 pendant presque un mois. Lorsqu'elle revient a la maison de sa mere, qui demeure dans la Cite de Londres, elle est amaigrie et dans un . Apres avoir ete questionnee par des amis et des voisins, elle est interrogee par le conseiller municipal, qui emet alors un mandat d'arrestation contre Susannah Wells, la femme qui occupait la maison dans laquelle Elizabeth Canning etait sequestree. Elle se joint ensuite a un groupe de voisins et d'amis qui se dirigent vers la maison de Susannah Wells dans Enfield Wash, ou elle identifie Mary Squires comme l'un de ses ravisseurs. Magistrat local et ecrivain connu a l'epoque, Henry Fielding s'implique dans l'affaire et prend parti pour Elizabeth Canning. D'autres arrestations sont effectuees et plusieurs depositions enregistrees. Susannah Wells et Mary Squires sont declarees coupables; Mary Squires est inculpee de vol, crime passible de la peine de mort.
