As of January 1, 2009 the city had a population of 145,151 inhabitants, making it the 16th largest city in Romania. The current name Targu Mure, whose historical form was O orhei, is the equivalent of Marosvasarhely as Romanian 'targ' means 'market' and Hungarian 'vasarhely' means 'marketplace'.
