Ime sastava je izvedenica od "will comply," radioamaterskog izraza za "razumijem." Godine 1994. osnovali su ga preostali lanovi alt-country sastava Uncle Tupelo nakon odlaska pjeva a Jaya Farrara. Postava Wilca esto se mijenjala, a jedini prvotni lanovi ostali su pjeva Jeff Tweedy i basist John Stirratt. Od po etka 2004., ostali trenuta ni lanovi su gitarist Nels Cline, multiinstrumentalisti Pat Sansone i Mikael Jorgensen te bubnjar Glenn Kotche. Wilco je objavio sedam studijskih albuma, dvostruki koncertni album i tri suradni ka izdanja: dva s Billyjem Braggom i jedan s The Minus 5. Glazba sastava inspirirana je raznolikim glazbenicima i stilovima, me u kojima su i Bill Fay i Television, a i sam je izvr io utjecaj na mnoge predstavnike modernog alternativnog rocka.
