Dante er bade auctor (forfatter) og actor (aktor/skuespiller) i sit digt, og af samme grund kan La Divina Commedia betragtes som den forste europaeiske jeg-roman. Han er selv hovedpersonen i et af sine digte, som i lang tid blev kaldt Il Dante. Vaerket er ikke komisk, trods titlen. Titlen Commedia som var den oprindelige titel pa vaerket, hentyder dels til, at historien starter ulykkeligt, og slutter i Himmelen hos Gud, dels til at dets stil ikke er entydigt ophojet, som i en klassisk tragedie men blandet. Desuden er fortaellingen en komedie (commedia), fordi den er skrevet pa italiensk, og ikke pa latin, som ellers var kendetegnende for middelalderens tragedier. Den var skrevet for folket. Dante tager laeseren med pa en rejse gennem egne, som straekker sig hinsides livet og virkeligheden. Fortaellingen om hans rejse foregar i aret 1300, hvor han gennemrejser de 3 dodsriger ved hjaelp af tre guider: den romerske digter Vergil, Dantes elskede Be
