Estratto: Margherita di Valois (Castello di Saint-Germain-en-Laye, 14 maggio 1553 - Parigi, 27 marzo 1615) fu una principessa francese del ramo dei Valois-Angouleme della dinastia dei Capetingi, figlia di Enrico II di Francia e dell'italiana Caterina de' Medici e regina consorte di Francia e Navarra come prima moglie del protestante Enrico III di Navarra (futuro Enrico IV di Francia). Al suo matrimonio, avvenuto il 18 agosto 1572, che doveva essere simbolo di riconciliazione tra cattolici e ugonotti, fece seguito, appena cinque giorni dopo, il massacro di San Bartolomeo in cui morirono migliaia di protestanti, segnando anche la ripresa delle guerre di religione. Partecipo a vari intrighi di corte, alleandosi ai Malcontenti guidati dal fratello minore Francesco d'Alencon: cio le comporto l'odio del fratello maggiore Enrico III. Mentre, come moglie del re di Navarra, svolse un ruolo di pacificazione nei rapporti tempestosi tra il marito e la monarchia francese. Intermediaria fra le due corti, si sforzo di condurre una felice vita coniugale, ma la sua sterilita e le tensioni politiche causate dalle guerre di religione, vinsero sul suo matrimonio. Nel 1585, respinta sia da Enrico III che dal marito, Margherita scelse l'opposizione alleandosi alla Lega cattolica contro di loro. Infine venne imprigionata nel castello di Usson, dove rimase diciannove anni. Durante questo periodo scrisse le sue Memoires. Nel 1599, ultima discendente dei Valois, a seguito dell'offerta di generose ricompense, accetto l'annullamento del matrimonio con Enrico IV.
